Meet Vero

Vero is a community lawyer, una abogada del pueblo, with deep roots in our border.  She grew up in Cd. Juarez and El Paso.  She is a fourth-generation commuter.  Her great-grandparents met on the U.S. side of the Chamizal in the early 1900s. Her great-grandfather was able to get a green card through the help of his employer, the railroad - an opportunity he learned about through a friend. However, due to racist housing lending and segregation and their low wages, her great-grandparents could not buy a house in El Paso.  Once they had legal status, they bought a house in Juarez and thus began 4 generations of commuting to El Paso.

Vero bought her first house in the historic Manhattan Heights district in 2007.  She is proud of her immigrant roots and has committed her personal and professional life to social justice.

She has worked for over 19 years as an attorney at Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, providing free, high-quality legal services to low-income Texans in the areas of homeownership, colonias, rentals, environmental pollution, consumer protection, civil rights, and many others. She has represented hundreds and hundreds of low-income El Pasoans, many of whom live in South Central.  She has represented homeowners and tenants displaced or threatened by displacement for public projects; as well as those impacted by pollution, natural disasters, economic crises, the pandemic, discrimination, and mass shootings.  She was part of the team that represented Familias Unidas por la Educacion regarding the school closures of Beall and Burleson by EPISD.  She represents the San Xavier neighborhood regarding the damage to homes from TXDOT’s I-10 Connect Project, and both Familias Unidas del Chamizal and San Xavier regarding the Bridge of the Americas modernization, with the goal of removing commercial trucks, adding public transportation to the project, and improving air quality.

Vero ran for Mayor of the City of El Paso in 2020.  After her loss, her supporters and she created Justicia Fronteriza PAC, which aims to recruit, support, and elect progressive candidates to local races and make our local elections more fair.  For the last 2 years, Justicia Fronteriza PAC has worked to implement campaign contribution limits of $1000 per individual in city races.  There are no limits currently, which leaves a threat of corruption and discourages voters and community candidates from participating in local elections.

Vero is a graduate of Burges High School, Brown University, and The University of Texas School of Law.
